Why people stay in West Hill
West Hill runs from the Livingston Ave ridge west toward the Manning Boulevard border, straddling both sides of Central Ave. It's a mixed working-class residential area with a long commercial strip along Central and Washington Avenues. Nothing here targets tourists. At 9pm the diners are winding down and the Central Ave bus is still running about every 20 minutes.
For most family visits West Hill doesn’t offer much reason to stay — you’re 15 minutes by bus from anything you came to Albany to see, and the neighborhood lacks the walkable character of Center Square or Pine Hills. But if you’re on a tight budget and driving, some of the Central Ave motels are honest value at $75-100 a night. Just don’t expect charm.
The couple of chain-adjacent motels along Central Ave near Manning (Skylane Motel, Central Motor Inn) run $75-105 a night with free parking. These are functional, not scenic. If you’re driving and just need a bed with easy highway access, they work. Avoid the older independent motels closer to Henry Johnson Blvd — they’re a step down and reviews reflect it. Anyone traveling with kids will feel more comfortable spending an extra $30 for a Colonie-area chain.

Driving is easy and parking is free almost everywhere, which is the neighborhood's honest advantage over downtown.
Questions about West Hill
Central Ave and Washington Ave are fine during the day and reasonable at night. Side streets north of Central near Henry Johnson Blvd are more uneven — stick to the main corridors if you’re not familiar with the area.
Only for two reasons: you’re driving and want free parking with cheap motel rates ($75-100), or you’re visiting family in the neighborhood. Otherwise there are better bases in Colonie or Menands for similar money.
