What to expect at Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site
Schuyler Mansion is the 1761 Georgian home of Continental Army general Philip Schuyler, and yes, this is where Alexander Hamilton married Elizabeth Schuyler in the front parlor in December 1780. Since Hamilton the musical, visitor numbers have doubled — but the mansion's guides deserve credit for using the moment to tell a fuller story about the Schuylers' wealth (built partly on the labor of enslaved people, whose lives are now interpreted throughout the tour) and the reality of Revolutionary-era Albany. Tours run every hour on the hour and are the only way to see the interior.
The house sits in the Pastures Historic District south of downtown, a fifteen-minute walk from the Capitol through some of Albany's oldest streets. Book the first tour at 11:00 if you want a smaller group — Hamilton fans cluster around midday. The site is small: expect a 45-minute guided tour plus 15-30 minutes in the ground-floor exhibits about enslavement and the Schuyler household, which are worth your time.
