Rensselaer sits directly across the Hudson from downtown Albany, connected by the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Its practical claim to fame is the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station, the ninth-busiest in the country. The city itself is a small industrial-residential town of about 9,000 people, with a few blocks of commercial life along Broadway and a waterfront that has never quite recovered its 19th-century prominence.
For train travelers who want to stay one night close to the station, the couple of hotels here work. For anyone else, Rensselaer isn’t really a destination — the honest use case is a same-day-train-arrival stopover before heading into Albany proper the next morning. Skip as a multi-night base; you’ll cross the bridge every day for anything worth doing.
The Hyatt Place East Greenbush is 10 minutes east and runs $115-155 with free parking. The Marriott Renaissance Albany downtown is actually a better pick for train travelers since it's a $12 Uber from the station and puts you in walkable Albany immediately. If you must stay in Rensselaer proper, the older Best Western is functional at $89-119. Nothing here is remarkable.

The Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station is here — the main rail gateway to the Capital Region, with service from NYC (2:20), Boston (5:30), Chicago (16 hours on the Lake Shore Limited), and Montreal (10 hours on the Adirondack). To reach downtown Albany, cross the Dunn Memorial Bridge — CDTA Route 214 in 10 minutes, Uber for $12, or a 25-minute walk. Driving is easy, station parking is $12/day.
