Where to stay under $130
Skip downtown rack rates. The Best Western Sovereign on Wolf Road runs $95 to $120 and includes breakfast, and the Red Roof PLUS+ on Watervliet Avenue lands around $85. Both need a bus or short rideshare into town — CDTA route 905 gets you to the Plaza in 25 minutes for $1.50.
If you must stay downtown, the Hampton Inn on Chapel Street occasionally dips to $130 midweek in winter. Set a rate alert.
Day 1: free downtown
The Capitol tour is free. The Corning Tower observation deck is free. The New York State Museum on Madison Avenue is free and huge — dinosaur skeletons, a working 1940s carousel on the top floor, a whole hall on 9/11. That's easily a full day. Lunch at the Plaza concourse: a slice at DeFazio's or a sandwich at Roll On Cafe for under $10.
Day 2: Lark Street and the park
Walk Lark Street and Washington Park. Coffee at Stacks ($4), tacos at El Loco for lunch ($9 to $12), then the park itself, which is free and hosts the Tulip Festival in May and Park Playhouse's free summer musicals in July and August. Dinner at Bombers Burrito Bar, where a stuffed burrito is $9.
Day 3: the waterfront and USS Slater
Walk the Skyway to Corning Preserve. The USS Slater tour is $10 and worth every dollar. Lunch at Capital Q Smokehouse — a two-meat plate is $16. Cap the trip at the Albany Distilling Co. tasting room on Montgomery Street, $8 for a flight.
