Why people stay in Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs is 45 minutes north of Albany on I-87, and it's the honest crown jewel of Capital Region day trips or overnight stays. Downtown Broadway is a genuinely walkable, restaurant-dense strip anchored by the Adelphi Hotel and lined with independent shops, spas, and cafes. The Saratoga Race Course (America's oldest thoroughbred track, opened 1863) runs late July through Labor Day; the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) hosts NYC Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Dave Matthews Band summer residencies.

For families the resort character is real — you can spend three days here and never drive. Skip visiting during August track season without a reservation booked months ago; hotel rates triple ($350-800/night is normal) and downtown is elbow-to-elbow. Shoulder-season Saratoga (May-June, September-October) is the honest sweet spot with rates around $145-200 and everything still open.

The Adelphi Hotel on Broadway ($250-450 non-track) and the Saratoga Arms ($200-350) are the historic boutique picks. Chain options — Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, Marriott Courtyard — cluster around Route 50 south of downtown at $135-220 outside track season. Book the walkable-downtown properties for maximum value even at higher rates. Avoid the roadside motels on Route 9 north — dated and often not worth the modest savings.

Getting around Saratoga Springs

From Albany International Airport, 40 minutes by car via I-87 north to exit 13N or 14. From Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak, Saratoga has its own station (West Avenue) with 3-4 daily trains from NYC via Albany — a 35-minute ride from Albany. CDTA Route 452 runs Albany to Saratoga in about 75 minutes. Downtown Saratoga is walkable end-to-end; you don’t need transit inside town.
