What to expect at Ten Broeck Mansion

Abraham Ten Broeck built this Federal-style mansion in 1798 after his previous home burned in Albany's Great Fire of 1797. He was a Revolutionary War general, mayor of Albany, and one of the founding wealthy families of the city. The house today is run by the Albany County Historical Association and remains largely as the last resident family, the Olcotts, left it in the 1940s — furnished, atmospheric, and mercifully un-modernized. The big surprise for most visitors is the wine cellar, discovered in 1972 with hundreds of bottles from the 1820s onward still corked.

Ten Broeck sits at the top of a leafy Arbor Hill block that most tourists never find, which is part of its charm. Tours are guided and run about 45 minutes; you’ll want to add fifteen minutes for the garden, which has original 19th-century plantings. It pairs well with the Albany Institute (six blocks south) for a museum-heavy afternoon that avoids the Plaza crowds entirely.
