What to expect at New York State Museum

The New York State Museum anchors the south end of Empire State Plaza and is the single best rainy-day stop in Albany for families. Four floors cover the state's natural history, Native American heritage, urban life in New York City, and a sobering 9/11 memorial exhibit with recovered artifacts from the World Trade Center. The scope is enormous but genuinely well-curated — kids gravitate to the full-size mastodon skeleton and the working 1890s carousel on the fourth floor, which still gives free rides.

Plan on three to four hours minimum. Enter from the Madison Avenue side to skip the Plaza concourse crowds, hit the mastodon and Ice Age hall first while kids are fresh, then break for lunch at the Plaza food court downstairs before tackling the New York Metropolis and 9/11 galleries. The carousel typically runs 11:00-16:30 with a break at lunch — check the board near the fourth-floor elevators when you arrive.
