What to expect at Irish American Heritage Museum

Albany's Irish American Heritage Museum moved into a compact storefront gallery on Broadway in 2012 and has been quietly building one of the best small-museum experiences in the city. Rotating exhibits cover the Great Hunger, Irish contributions to the Erie Canal (which starts just north of Albany), the Molly Maguires, and Irish-American labor and political history. The permanent timeline gallery is dense with primary documents — passenger manifests, letters home, immigration papers — that reward slow reading.

This is a one-hour stop, ideal after a morning at the Capitol or before dinner in downtown Albany. If you have Irish family roots in upstate New York, ask the staff about the genealogy resources; they’ll often pull records for walk-in visitors. The gift shop stocks Irish books and music you won’t find at the airport bookstore. Combine easily with a pint at nearby McGeary's Irish Pub on Sheridan Avenue.
