Getting there
Drive west on I-88 to Exit 17, then Route 28 south. It's 90 minutes to Cooperstown from downtown Albany. There's no train or bus that works for a same-day trip; you need a car. Parking in Cooperstown in summer is a hassle — use the free trolley lot on Route 28 south of town and ride in for $2.50 all day.
What to do
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on Main Street is the reason to come; adult admission is $28, kids 7 to 12 are $12. Plan 3 hours minimum. Afterwards, walk down to Lake Otsego and rent a kayak from the Cooperstown Beach Company ($25 an hour) or take the Glimmerglass Queen boat tour ($20). The Fenimore Art Museum and Farmers' Museum on Lake Road are the other two anchors, $12 each.

Lunch on Main Street: Doubleday Cafe for diner classics ($14) or the Cooperstown Diner across the street. For a sit-down dinner before the drive back, the Otesaga Resort's dining room is dressy and $50 a plate; Mel's at 22 is casual and half that. Ice cream at Schneider's Bakery.
