Watervliet
Historic federal arsenal town on the Hudson — pass-through for most visitors, budget stopover option.
Why people stay in Watervliet
Watervliet is a small city on the west bank of the Hudson between Albany and Cohoes, defined by the Watervliet Arsenal — the oldest continuously active US Army arsenal, in operation since 1813. The commercial spine along 19th Street and Broadway has diner-and-hardware-store character with modest recent investment. On a weeknight at 9pm it's residential-quiet.
For visitors this isn’t a destination or a hotel base — it's a small working city that you’ll pass through en route to Cohoes or Troy. The Arsenal has a museum with limited public hours that's genuinely interesting for military-history readers. Otherwise Watervliet's best offer is as a very budget-friendly stopover along the river if the chain hotel prices in Colonie or Albany don’t work for you.
Lodging in Watervliet proper is limited to a couple of independent motels on Broadway running $85-105. Functional, not scenic. For similar money the Best Western in Latham is 8 minutes away with better standards. Honestly the argument for staying in Watervliet is thin unless you’re specifically visiting someone at the Arsenal or need cheap-and-quick highway access to I-787.

The Arsenal Museum has limited public hours, usually Wednesdays. Photo ID required at the gate. Call the museum ahead to confirm current schedule — hours change with base operations.
Only if you need the cheapest possible lodging with I-787 access, or you’re visiting someone at the Arsenal. Otherwise Menands, Troy, or Colonie all offer better value for a similar price band.
