Getting there
Drive north on I-87 (the Northway) about 55 minutes to Exit 21. There's no train or bus that makes this work for a day trip. Parking in the village is metered on Canada Street or $10 in the beach lot. Traffic is worst on July and August Saturdays — leave Albany by 8:30am to beat it.
What to do
The Lake George Steamboat Company runs 1-hour to full-day cruises from the village pier; the Minne-Ha-Ha's paddlewheel hour is $22 and works fine for a first visit. Million Dollar Beach ($10 per car) is the main public swimming beach. Fort William Henry is a reconstructed 1755 British fort with costumed guides ($22). Hike Prospect Mountain for the best view — the road to the summit is $10 per car, or hike the 1.6-mile trail up.

Lunch: The Boardwalk on Canada Street for lake-view burgers ($15) or Duffy's Tavern for a beer and a plate. Dinner: The Log Jam on Route 9 for prime rib ($34) or George's Restaurant for Greek and diner classics. Ice cream at Martha's on Route 9.
