Best: May, September, October

May peaks with the Albany Tulip Festival on Mother's Day weekend, when Washington Park has 140,000 blooming tulips and the parade fills State Street. Book hotels 6 weeks out. Late May through early June is quiet, mild (65 to 75 F), and hotel rates drop back to normal.

September and early October are Albany's genuinely best weather — dry, 60s and 70s, and fall color peaks in the Berkshires and Adirondacks on day trips. Hotels around $130 to $180 downtown.

Fine: June, July, August

Summer is hot and humid (highs 80 to 88 F). Park Playhouse's free musicals run in Washington Park nightly except Mondays in July and August. Downtown empties on weekends. Rates are moderate — the tourism spike is Saratoga, not Albany.

Cheap but cold: November through March

January and February are cold (highs in the 20s, lows in the teens) with reliable snow. Downtown hotels drop to $95 to $130. The Empire State Plaza ice rink runs December through February and is free. If you don’t mind the cold, this is when locals go to restaurants and everything is easy to book.

Avoid: mid-March and mid-May (graduation)

Mid-March is mud season — brown, wet, nothing blooming. Mid-May graduation weekend at UAlbany, RPI, and Saint Rose books out hotels months in advance and doubles rates. Same story in mid-December when the state legislature has its holiday gatherings.
