Corning Tower observation deck
The 42nd-floor deck is Albany's highest public vantage point and free — but it closes at 3:30pm weekdays, so in winter you can catch true sunset, in summer you can’t. Aim for November through February when sunset falls before 4:45pm. West-facing views across the Helderbergs.
The Corning Preserve waterfront
The Hudson River waterfront at Corning Preserve faces east across to Rensselaer, so the sun sets behind you — but the light on the far bank and the Livingston Avenue Bridge is beautiful. Walk in via the Skyway from downtown. Free, open until dusk officially, and quiet enough that you’ll often be alone.
Thacher State Park overlook
Twenty minutes southwest of Albany off Route 157. Thacher's Escarpment Trail overlook is a 1,000-foot cliff facing east over the Hudson Valley — same reasoning as the waterfront (sun behind you) but the view across the entire valley makes it the region's best sunset spot. Park entry is $6 per car in season, free off-season.
Washington Park and the Empire State Plaza reflecting pool
In Washington Park, the small hill by the King monument gives a clean west-facing view. On the Plaza, the reflecting pool at sunset reflects the Corning Tower and the last light off the Capitol dome — one of Albany's most-photographed frames. Both free, both walkable from downtown hotels.
