Where to go: Lark Street and Pearl Street
Lark Street between State and Madison is Albany's most walkable drinking strip. The Lark Tavern is the anchor — old-Albany bar, live music, $6 pints. City Beer Hall on Howard Street is a solid craft-beer stop. Pearl Street in the warehouse district has the cocktail bars: The Speakeasy 518 (a proper hidden speakeasy behind City Beer Hall) and Savoy Taproom both do drinks at $12 to $14 that would cost $18 in New York City.
Live music and dive bars
The Egg on the Plaza books touring acts across every genre; tickets $30 to $75. Empire Live on Clinton Ave is Albany's mid-size rock venue. McGeary's on Clinton Square is the classic Irish pub — bands most weekends, no cover. For a proper dive, Oh Bar on Central Avenue or the Palais Royale.
Where to skip
The North Pearl Street strip below the movie theater is aggressively college-oriented — fine if you’re 22, rough if you’re not. Skip Jillian's-style dance bars unless that's specifically what you want. The Wolf Road corridor has almost no walkable nightlife despite the hotel cluster; taxi or rideshare downtown.
