What Upper Union Street is
Upper Union Street is the commercial spine of Schenectady's east side, running from Nott Terrace up past Union College and out toward Niskayuna. The stretch that matters for a visitor is the six blocks between the college gates and Wright Avenue, where the storefronts run continuous: Ambition Cafe, Cornell's Restaurant nearby, Aperitivo Bistro, More Perreca's, Union Cafe, the Open Door bookshop just below on Jay Street, and a dozen more. It is Schenectady's most walkable dining strip and one of the better ones in the Capital Region, comparable to Lark Street in Albany but with more surface parking and less college-town chaos.
Union College anchors the west end. On football Saturdays and graduation weekends the street fills; on a normal Tuesday it is neighbourhood-quiet, with the kind of foot traffic that means restaurants have real regulars. The residential blocks north and south are the GE Realty Plot — big turn-of-the-century houses on shaded streets — and the Stockade district is a 10-minute walk downhill toward the Mohawk River.

Book Upper Union Street if your reason for visiting the Capital Region is Schenectady itself: a Union College parents' weekend, a Proctors show, a wedding at the Van Dyck or the Mohawk River Country Club, or a museum day at miSci and the Stockade. It also suits people combining Saratoga (20 minutes north on I-87) with Albany (20 minutes south) who want a walkable dinner strip at home base and do not care which city they sleep in.
It works for a specific kind of business traveller too — anyone with an appointment at GE, MVP Health Care, or the Schenectady County offices. The drive to Albany's Empire State Plaza is 22 minutes on I-890 to I-90, reliably, and parking downtown is easier from this direction than from within Albany itself. If you are commuting to Albany for meetings but want a better dinner scene, this is a legitimate choice.
Who should stay in Albany instead
Do not book Upper Union Street if your trip is Empire State Plaza, Capitol tour, New York State Museum, and Palace Theatre. You will spend an hour a day in the car, and while the drive is easy, it is an hour you did not sign up for. Base in Albany, eat dinner in Albany, and drive to Schenectady once for a Proctors show if the calendar lines up.
Also skip it if you want a hotel within walking distance of the restaurants. Union Street has none — the strip is residential and commercial, not hospitality. The nearest hotels are the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites on Balltown Road (10 minutes east), the Parker Inn downtown by Proctors (10 minutes west), or the chains along I-890 in Rotterdam. If walking to dinner from your pillow matters, Albany's Center Square wins.

Schenectady hotel rates run $105 to $145 midweek and $125 to $170 weekends, which is roughly 15-20% cheaper than equivalent Albany chains. The Hampton Inn on Balltown Road hovers around $130. The Parker Inn downtown, a small boutique across from Proctors, runs $145-185 depending on the show calendar. Homewood Suites is $160-200 with a kitchen.
Rates spike on Union College move-in weekend (late August), parents' weekend (late September or early October), graduation (mid-June), and any major Proctors run — a week of Hamilton or Wicked can double weekend rates. The quiet windows are mid-January through late February and the second half of November. Parking is free at every hotel and at every restaurant on Upper Union Street, a genuine advantage over Albany.
Walking distance from a Union Street base
If you can secure a rental on the Union Street blocks themselves (Airbnb has 6-10 listings in the Realty Plot), walking times are: Aperitivo 3 minutes, More Perreca's 5, Ambition Cafe 4, Union College campus 6, the Nott Memorial 8, Central Park's pond 10, the Stockade district's Riverside Park 15, Proctors Theatre 22. That last one is doable but most people drive it.
Not walkable: miSci and the Schenectady County Historical Society (across town), Rivers Casino (2 miles), Union Station, and anything in Niskayuna or Rotterdam. The bus down Union Street is CDTA route 351 or 353 depending on hour, roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays, and drops you at the State Street transit hub for Albany connections.
Upper Union versus Albany's Lark Street
Lark Street is denser, louder, and later — bars open until 2, restaurants until 11, and the walk from a Center Square hotel is 5 minutes. Union Street is calmer, kitchens close at 10, and the parking is free. Prices at comparable restaurants run 10-15% cheaper on Union Street; a full dinner for two with wine at Aperitivo lands around $95 versus $115 at a Lark Street peer.
For a first-time Capital Region visitor, Lark Street wins because it is closer to everything else you came to see. For a second-time visitor or someone with a Schenectady-specific reason to be here, Union Street is the more relaxing base. And for anyone with a car, the choice is really about which drive you would rather take: 22 minutes to Albany's museums from Schenectady, or 25 minutes to Saratoga's racetrack from Albany. Both are fine.

Book the Parker Inn if you want a walkable base for Proctors and are willing to drive to Union Street for dinner (10 minutes). Book the Hampton Inn on Balltown Road if you want the reverse: a 6-minute drive to Union Street and a 12-minute drive to Proctors, with a pool and a reliable breakfast. Skip the older motels on State Street west of downtown; the price gap does not justify the neighbourhood.
Time it right. Union Street's best week is the second week of October, when the Realty Plot leaves turn and the outdoor tables at Aperitivo and Ambition are still viable at lunch. Avoid Union College parents' weekend unless that is why you are here. And check the Proctors calendar before you lock in dates — a touring Broadway run will affect rates region-wide, not just at the Parker Inn.
