Eight Capital Region hotels where the fitness center is more than two treadmills and a broken elliptical — ranked by whether a serious traveller can maintain a proper training program.

Hotel gyms are almost always bad. Some Albany ones aren’t.

Hotel fitness centers are one of the last frontiers of casual hospitality dishonesty. "Fitness center" in a chain hotel's marketing can mean anything from a properly equipped strength room to a converted meeting room with two Precor treadmills from 2014, one of which is out of service. If you actually train — powerlifting, running, functional fitness — you’re used to being disappointed. The Albany region has a handful of properties where the gym is genuinely usable.

This ranking is based on what's in the room, not what the website claims. I’ve walked through each of these fitness centers in the past six months. Criteria: dumbbells to at least 50 pounds, a bench or two, cardio equipment that works and isn’t taped off, either a squat rack, cable machine, or Peloton alternative. All are within the Capital Region. Rates run $139-259 depending on hotel positioning; the gym doesn’t usually change the room price much.

1. Renaissance Albany Downtown

Best hotel gym in the region by a clear margin. Renaissance on Broadway renovated its fitness center in 2023 into a proper room: dumbbells from 5 to 60 pounds in five-pound increments, three benches, a Peloton bike, two treadmills, a rower, a functional trainer with cable attachments, and mats for stretching. Room is open 24 hours with keycard access. Not cavernous but well-planned, with enough space for two or three people to train simultaneously without collision.

The location matters too: Broadway is safe to run early morning, and you can add a route along the Empire State Plaza and Corning Preserve trail along the Hudson for 3-6 mile runs. Rates $199-259 midweek. Book here if serious training is a non-negotiable part of your trip. The only weakness is no squat rack, so if you’re mid-cycle on a strength program you’ll need to modify. Everything else scales up to intermediate lifting.

2. Hyatt Place Albany-Colonie

Best suburban hotel gym. Hyatt Place on Wolf Road has a fitness center that's larger than most in this ranking — dumbbells to 50 pounds, two benches, a functional trainer, three treadmills, two ellipticals, a rower, and a stretching corner with mats and foam rollers. Open 24 hours. The room is windowed and doesn’t feel like a converted closet, which most hotel gyms do.

Rate is $149-189 with breakfast included, which is 30-40% cheaper than the Renaissance and makes this the value pick for training-focused travelers. Wolf Road location means outdoor running is limited to industrial streets, so plan cardio indoors or drive to nearby Six Mile Waterworks Park for a proper trail run. Book this one if you’re on a Wolf Road area assignment or need Hyatt points redemption; it's the best fitness value in the region.

3. Element Albany Airport

Design-forward gym in a design-forward hotel. Element in Latham built its fitness center as a legitimate space with dumbbells to 45 pounds, a full cable machine, a squat rack (rare in hotel gyms), two treadmills, a rower, and a Peloton. The room is naturally lit through large windows facing the parking lot rather than an interior corridor, which sounds trivial but makes early morning training much better.

Rates $169-219. The Element brand pitches itself to health-focused business travelers and the amenities follow through — the breakfast bar has actual protein and whole grains rather than the usual muffin display. The squat rack is the differentiator here: if you’re mid-program on any pushing or pulling movement pattern, this and Century House are the only options in the region that let you continue properly. Book here if you’re a strength athlete.

4. Century House Latham — but you’ll want to know about Vent Fitness

Century House's own gym is small and unremarkable, but the hotel has a guest agreement with Vent Fitness on Route 9, a real health club two miles away, and Century House provides free day passes. Vent has full equipment — squat racks, Olympic platforms, extensive dumbbells to 100 pounds, group classes, and a swimming pool. This effectively makes Century House the best-equipped hotel in the region for serious training.

Rates at Century House run $149-179 including breakfast. The day pass is included with the room key. The one catch: Vent is a five-minute drive from the hotel — no shuttle, so you need a car. Book Century House if you’re on a Wolf Road area assignment and want access to a real gym. Alternate option: if you’re staying downtown, the YMCA on Washington Avenue offers day passes for $15 and has a proper weight room.

5. Hilton Albany Downtown

The convention hotel gym with hidden decent equipment. Hilton Albany on Lodge Street has a fitness center that's genuinely mid-sized: dumbbells to 50 pounds, benches, treadmills, ellipticals, a Peloton, and a functional trainer. Open 24 hours. Not as new as the Renaissance's, but recently maintained.

The room can get crowded during conference weeks (avoid 6-8am on legislative session Tuesdays). Rates $189-249 depending on event schedule. If the Renaissance is booked out and you need a downtown hotel, this is the next-best gym choice. Location is decent for outdoor running — the Empire State Plaza esplanade is a block away and gives you a mile of flat, well-lit surface. Corning Preserve trail is a five-minute walk downhill.

6. Hilton Garden Inn Troy

Best gym across the river. Hilton Garden Inn on Fulton Street in Troy has a decent fitness center — dumbbells to 40 pounds, two benches, a cable machine, treadmills and ellipticals — but the real reason to book here is the outdoor running. The Hudson River trail runs directly behind the hotel, giving you 3+ miles each direction along a paved and mostly flat route with river views.

Rates $169-209. Troy itself is a smaller city than Albany and safer for early-morning running, with genuinely charming architecture along River Street to keep the miles interesting. Book here if you’re a runner more than a lifter — the gym is fine, but the location is the differentiator. For downtown Albany conference attendees willing to Uber, it's often worth staying in Troy for this reason alone.

7. What to skip and what to bring

Skip: any Hampton Inn gym in the region — most are two treadmills and a bench with dumbbells to 25 pounds. Skip Fairfield Inn gyms for the same reason. Skip the older Best Western and Days Inn properties entirely; the equipment ranges from dated to broken. Skip any Airbnb that lists "fitness center access" — it usually means the ground-floor apartment gym in a residential building, which is typically two treadmills and unusable for actual training.

What to bring: resistance bands (adds meaningful load without weight), a jump rope (works in any hotel room with 8-foot ceiling), and a sliding disc (turns any carpeted floor into a core station). If you’re on a serious program, plan one "reduced" session per hotel week rather than trying to force full-intensity training in a bad gym. For genuinely serious training, day passes at Vent Fitness ($20) or the Albany YMCA ($15) beat any hotel gym in the region.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Downtown Albany.

Which Albany hotel has a squat rack?

Element Albany Airport is the only chain hotel gym in the region with a proper squat rack. For serious lifters wanting more, Vent Fitness (day-passes via Century House Latham or paid at $20) has full Olympic platforms and multiple racks. Downtown, the YMCA on Washington Avenue has racks and accepts $15 day passes.

Are Albany hotel gyms open 24 hours?

Most chain hotel gyms in the region — Renaissance, Hilton, Hyatt Place, Element, Homewood Suites — are 24-hour access via room keycard. A few older properties restrict access to 5am-11pm. If you train at 4:30am before an early flight, confirm at booking that keycard access works overnight; some properties disable it despite advertising 24-hour access.

Which hotel is best for a runner in Albany?

Hilton Garden Inn Troy for direct trail access along the Hudson (3+ miles each direction). Downtown Albany runners should book the Renaissance and use the Empire State Plaza esplanade plus the Corning Preserve trail — you can string together 6-8 miles of paved, well-lit running. Avoid Wolf Road hotels for outdoor running; the surrounding streets aren’t runner-friendly.
