For a family relocating who wants to walk to a park or a coffee shop, look at the downtown options instead. The property is also a Marriott points earner, which tilts the math for a lot of frequent travelers.
3. Staybridge Suites Albany Wolf Road
Also on Wolf Road, the Staybridge has the biggest one-bedroom suites in this category — genuinely apartment-sized, with a separate bedroom you can close off. Full kitchenette with dishwasher and a proper dining table for four. Rates run $150-$220. The Sundowner Reception (free dinner and beer/wine Tue-Thu) is more substantive than the Homewood's and can genuinely replace a meal if you time it right.
The rooms show their age — carpets and finishes are tired — but the space and the kitchen are the point. If you’re staying three weeks and want to feel like you have an apartment rather than a hotel room, this is the pick over the Residence Inn next door. IHG points if that's your program. The gym is small and forgettable; use the pool instead, which is one of the better hotel pools in Colonie.

The kitchenette is competent rather than exceptional — the cookware set is thinner than the Homewood's, and you’ll want to buy a decent knife on day one if you cook seriously. But the rooms feel newer, the beds are better, and the property is well-run. This is my pick for a Wolf Road stay if you care more about the room quality than the kitchen depth, and the reverse of the Homewood's trade-off.
5. Sonesta ES Suites Albany-Airport
Formerly Hawthorn Suites, the Sonesta ES on Wolf Road offers the largest square footage per dollar in the category — two-bedroom suites at rates ($200-$260) that competitors charge for one-bedrooms. Full kitchenette with dishwasher, and the fireplaces in some units are functional and pleasant in January and February. Rates drop meaningfully at four nights and again at seven.
The property is the oldest on this list and the finishes show it. If you’re picky about interior design, look elsewhere. If you’re a family of four or five who needs two bedrooms and a real kitchen without paying for a downtown suite, the Sonesta is the answer. The location is the same Wolf Road strip as the others — functional, drive-everywhere, close to the airport and I-87.

On Washington Avenue Extension near SUNY Albany's campus, this Extended Stay America is the budget pick — rates from $110-$150 with weekly discounts. Kitchenette includes full-size fridge, two-burner cooktop, and microwave, but cookware is minimal and you’ll need to request pans and utensils at check-in (they hand them over in a plastic bin). No dishwasher.
For a graduate student parent moving up for a semester, a contractor on a short project, or anyone doing a longer stay on a real budget, this works. Don’t expect a housekeeping visit — extended-stay properties in this tier clean every 14 days by default, and daily cleaning costs extra. Rooms are basic, beds are fine, and the location is convenient for SUNY, UAlbany East Campus, and the Harriman State Office Campus. Bring your own knife.
7. TownePlace Suites Albany Downtown/Medical Center
On New Scotland Avenue near Albany Medical Center, the TownePlace is the correct pick for families of patients or medical staff on long rotations. Full kitchenette with dishwasher, two-burner, real cookware. Studios $150-$200, one-bedrooms $190-$240. Walking distance to Albany Med, Stratton VA, and the medical campus, which is rare — most extended-stays force you into a car.
It's also the closest kitchenette property to Washington Park and the Center Square/Lark Street dining strip, so it doubles as a good base for a longer leisure stay if you want to walk to dinner some nights. 8. Candlewood Suites Albany
The Candlewood off Washington Avenue Extension is the sleeper pick — genuinely full kitchens (not kitchenettes) with a full-size stove and oven rather than a two-burner cooktop. If you actually bake, roast, or cook anything that needs an oven, this is the only property on the list that lets you. Studios $130-$170, one-bedrooms $170-$220. No breakfast, no evening reception, no pool — you’re trading amenities for the kitchen.
Rooms are utilitarian and the property feels more like corporate housing than a hotel, which is exactly the point. If you’re relocating for two months and want to cook proper meals, this beats every other option in Albany. Bring your own coffee setup — the in-room coffee is thin — and shop at the ShopRite on Central Ave for the best combination of price and selection. IHG points if that matters.
How I’d choose
For a stay of a week or less where you’ll cook two or three times, book the Homewood Suites Crossgates. Best kitchenette, evening reception saves meals, easy grocery access. For a stay of two weeks or more, and if cooking a proper dinner most nights is the point, book the Candlewood for the full oven. For medical business at Albany Med, TownePlace on New Scotland is the only correct answer. For airport-tied travel, Residence Inn Wolf Road wins on the combination of shuttle and breakfast.
The one to avoid on this axis: any of the standard downtown hotels that advertise "suites" — the Hampton, Homewood Downtown, and the Hilton "kitchenette" rooms are all mini-fridge-plus-microwave setups that will disappoint anyone expecting real cooking. If you’re a downtown-loyal traveler who wants both walkability and cooking, book an Airbnb in Center Square or the Mansion District instead; the hotel product for that combination doesn’t really exist in Albany yet.
