1. Residence Inn Albany Downtown at the Capitol
The default and mostly the correct choice. Residence Inn on State Street sits directly across from the Capitol building and one block from the Empire State Plaza tunnel, so if you’re here for legislative work you can walk to committee rooms in eight minutes without going outside in February. Studio suites at $169-199/night, one-bedrooms at $209-249, monthly rates negotiable and typically 30% off nightly. Kitchens are full: two-burner induction, full fridge with freezer, dishwasher, actual pots and pans in the drawer.
Breakfast is included and unusually good for Marriott — hot eggs, real bacon, waffle iron. The evening reception Monday through Wednesday is a light dinner and beer/wine, which sounds cheesy but saves you $30-40 those nights. Skip it if you want quiet; the location means constant Uber traffic on State Street and occasional protest noise at the Capitol. Ask for a room facing the courtyard on floors 6-8.
2. TownePlace Suites Albany Downtown
Cheaper sibling to the Residence Inn and honestly nearly as good for less money. TownePlace on Chapel Street opened in 2018, kitchens are identical in equipment (two-burner, full fridge, dishwasher), and rates run $139-179 nightly or roughly $2,600/month. The building is newer than the Residence Inn so the fitness centre is bigger and the mattresses haven’t been through a decade of legislative sessions.
The catch: no evening reception, breakfast is grab-and-go rather than hot buffet, and the location on Chapel Street is quieter but further from the Plaza — figure 12 minutes on foot to the Capitol versus 8 from the Residence Inn. If you’re here on your own dime rather than a per diem, this is the smarter book. Ask for the higher floors; the lower rooms look into an office building's HVAC equipment on the roof next door.
3. Staybridge Suites Albany University Area
Best kitchens in the region, no contest. Staybridge Suites near SUNY Albany have full kitchens — not kitchenettes — with a proper four-burner cooktop, full-size fridge, dishwasher, and a dining table that seats four. Studios $129-159, one-bedrooms $169-209. If you’re on assignment for 6+ weeks and actually plan to cook real meals, this is the pick. There's a Whole Foods and a Fresh Market both within 10 minutes.
Location trade-off: you’re on Washington Avenue Extension, which means 15 minutes to downtown Albany and 20 minutes to Albany Med. If your assignment is at either of those, you’ll grow to hate the commute in a January snowstorm. But the pool is heated and open, the free breakfast is respectable, and Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday they do a hot evening social with actual entrees. Families with kids on 30+ day relocations tend to pick this one over downtown options.
4. Homewood Suites Albany Airport
The pick if your work is in Colonie, Latham, or you need to fly out mid-stay. Homewood Suites in Wolf Road area has proper kitchens (two-burner, full fridge, dishwasher), rates $149-189 nightly, and the airport shuttle runs on demand until 11pm. One-bedroom suites have a separate living room with a pull-out sofa, useful if a partner visits for a weekend.
Downsides: Wolf Road is a strip-mall corridor with no walkable dining, and the hotel is often booked out midweek by contractors so weekend availability is better than weekday. Breakfast is genuinely good — hot buffet with omelette station on weekends. If your assignment is at GlobalFoundries in Malta, this is 25 minutes south and the commute is easier than driving from downtown Albany. Ask for a room facing away from the airport approach path if you’re a light sleeper.
5. Hyatt House Albany Airport-Wolf Road
Direct competitor to the Homewood next door and I slightly prefer it. Hyatt House kitchens are the best-designed in the region — cabinets are actually laid out for cooking, not just storage — and the studios feel bigger than the Homewood's despite similar square footage. Rates $155-195, breakfast included, points redemptions competitive.
The building is newer (2019) and the design is less corporate-beige than the Homewood. Fitness centre is small but has actual free weights, not just machines. Downside: same Wolf Road location problem as everyone else on this strip — you’re driving everywhere, and the surrounding restaurants are all chains. But rooms are quieter than the Homewood, which sits closer to the airport road.
6. Extended Stay America Albany-SUNY
The genuinely cheap option. Extended Stay America on Washington Avenue Extension runs $79-109 nightly and roughly $1,800/month for a studio. Kitchens are basic — two-burner, apartment-size fridge, no dishwasher, no oven — but they exist and they work. This is where you stay if you’re on your own budget and need a month in Albany without spending your entire relocation stipend.
Be honest with yourself: the building is dated, the housekeeping is weekly not daily, and the hallway carpets have seen everything. Nothing is broken, nothing is dirty, but nothing feels new either. Bring your own cooking oil and spices — the "kitchen kit" on request is minimal. Skip if you’re expecting hotel service; book it if you’d otherwise stay in an Airbnb but want a front desk and a formal lease.
7. Element Albany Airport
The design-forward option. Marriott's Element brand in Latham has full kitchens with induction cooktops, and the rooms themselves are the most attractive extended-stay product in the region — light wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, actual art on the walls. Rates $169-219, hot breakfast included, evening reception Monday-Wednesday.
It's the newest hotel of this list (2020), so everything works and nothing squeaks. The pool is small but clean. The gym is properly equipped. Downside: Latham location is even further from downtown Albany than Wolf Road — figure 20 minutes to the Capitol. If your work is at Watervliet Arsenal or in Cohoes, this is closer than downtown options. If it's at the legislature, stay downtown instead.
