Why EV charging in Albany is trickier than it looks

The good news: Electrify America opened a 10-stall 350kW site off Central Avenue in Colonie in 2024, and Tesla's Latham Supercharger has 12 stalls open to non-Teslas via the Magic Dock. So the hotels below are ranked not just on what's in their lot, but on what's within a five-minute drive if their two ports are full. Prices quoted are rack rates for a mid-week night in shoulder season; add 40-60% for Saratoga meet in July and August, and 25% for legislative session weeks in Albany downtown.
1. Homewood Suites Albany-Crossgates Mall
The pick if you actually need to charge overnight and sleep. Homewood Suites in Guilderland installed 8 Level 2 ChargePoint stations in 2023 — four times what most competitors offer — and they sit in a well-lit row directly outside the lobby doors. Rates run $159-189 for a one-bedroom suite with full kitchen, and the free hot breakfast is a genuine buffet, not a yoghurt bar. Charging is included, no session fee, no time limit. The catch: it's next to Crossgates Mall, which means the parking lot fills with holiday shoppers in December and you may have to circle.
Location works if you’re heading west on I-90 to Utica or Syracuse the next morning, or north to Saratoga via the Northway. Ten minutes to downtown Albany, twenty to Troy. Rooms are dated in the corridors but the suites themselves were refreshed in 2022 with new mattresses and USB outlets everywhere. I’d book this one first for any stay over one night.
2. The Kimpton Hotel — no, wait, the Renaissance Albany Downtown
There is no Kimpton in Albany, despite what a lot of AI-generated round-ups will tell you. The actual best downtown option with charging is the Renaissance Albany on Broadway, which has two Tesla Wall Connectors and two universal Level 2s in its underground garage. Overnight self-park with charging is $28, valet is $38. Rates $199-259 for a king room, higher during legislative session. The rooftop bar Wellington's has genuinely good cocktails and a view of the Corning Tower.
Book this one if you’re here for state business, the Palace Theatre, or the Egg. The catch: only four charging spots in a 200-key hotel means you should call ahead to reserve. Front desk will hold one if you give them your arrival time. Skip it if you want quiet — the garage entrance ramp is loud and the lower floors get street noise from Broadway on Friday nights when the bars empty out around 2am.
3. Hilton Garden Inn Troy
Across the river in downtown Troy, the Hilton Garden Inn on Fulton Street has four Level 2 chargers in its adjacent garage, and they’re almost never all in use because Troy has fewer EV commuters than Albany proper. Rates $169-209, and the location is genuinely charming — you’re two blocks from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, the Troy Farmers Market on Saturdays (year-round, indoor in winter), and the Rensselaer County Historical Society. Rooms have been renovated recently and the beds are Serta iComforts, better than most Hilton Gardens.
The trade-off is you’re 15 minutes from Albany's convention centre and 25 from the airport. But if your reason for being here is anything cultural — EMPAC at RPI, Troy Music Hall, the antique row on River Street — this beats staying downtown Albany. Charging is $2/hour via the hotel's own meter, capped at $10 overnight, which is fair. Ask for a room facing the Hudson; the sunrise view over the river is worth requesting.
4. Hyatt Place Albany-Colonie
Hyatt Place on Wolf Road installed four Tesla Destination Chargers and two universal Level 2s in 2022, and Wolf Road itself is the Capital Region's chain-restaurant spine, so you’re never more than three minutes from dinner. Rates $149-189, and the World of Hyatt points redemption here is one of the better values in the portfolio at 8,000 points off-peak. Breakfast is included with any rate, which is unusual for Hyatt Place.
The honest downside: Wolf Road is a six-lane arterial that's ugly and loud, and the hotel sits in a parking lot the size of two football fields. There's no walkable neighbourhood here — you drive to everything. But for a one-night airport-adjacent stopover where you need to charge and leave by 7am, it's the most reliable option in the region. Colonie Center mall next door has a Cheesecake Factory if you want something open until 11pm.
5. The Adelphi Hotel, Saratoga Springs
Forty minutes north of Albany but worth including because it's the only genuinely luxury hotel in the region with charging. The Adelphi, restored in 2017, has two Tesla Wall Connectors and two J1772s in its rear valet lot. Rates start at $329 off-season and climb past $900 during racing season in late July and August. Morrissey's downstairs is the best hotel bar within 100 miles of here, and the restaurant Salt & Char shares the ground floor.
You’re not staying here to charge — you’re charging because you’re already staying here. Book it for a Saratoga weekend in April or October when SPAC has performances and Congress Park is at its best. Skip it in February when the town is quiet and half the shops on Broadway are closed. Valet is $45/night and charging is complimentary for guests. The rooms in the historic wing are smaller; ask for the new wing if you want a king with a proper desk.
6. Fairfield Inn Albany East Greenbush
The budget pick with actual charging. Fairfield Inn on Route 4 in East Greenbush has two Level 2 ChargePoint stations, and rates run $119-149 including breakfast. It's not fancy — the lobby is Fairfield-standard and the pool is small — but rooms are clean, the beds were replaced in 2023, and you can charge overnight for free. Ten minutes to downtown Albany over the Dunn Memorial Bridge, fifteen to the airport.
Downside: East Greenbush is a suburban sprawl with no walkable core, so you’re driving to dinner. Upside: the neighbouring Recovery Sports Grill is open until midnight, and there's a Trader Joe's five minutes away for road-trip supplies. If you’re passing through on I-90 and need to sleep and charge cheaply, this beats every Motel 6 or Red Roof in the region, none of which have chargers at all.
7. What to skip, and where to charge instead
Skip the Best Western Sovereign on Wolf Road — the two chargers were installed in 2019, never maintained, and the ChargePoint app shows them offline more often than not. Skip the older Marriott properties in Latham unless you confirm by phone the day of arrival; they list charging on their websites but the actual hardware is inconsistent. And skip any downtown Airbnb that promises "street parking with charging" — Albany's on-street EV infrastructure is essentially zero outside the state-owned Empire Plaza garage.
If your hotel's chargers are dead, your fallbacks are: the Electrify America bank at Northway Mall (10 stalls, 350kW, 24/7), the Tesla Supercharger in Latham (12 stalls with Magic Dock), and the free Level 2s at Crossgates Mall's Macy's parking lot (six ports, though the mall closes at 9pm and security may ask you to leave). The state office campus on Washington Avenue has free chargers weekdays but they’re gated on weekends. Plan accordingly.
