The shuttle question, honestly answered
Albany International Airport (ALB) sits in Colonie, ten minutes north of downtown Albany and about seven minutes from the Wolf Road hotel cluster. Nearly every hotel within five miles claims to offer an airport shuttle. Roughly half actually run one reliably. The rest have a van that operates "on demand" during hours that mysteriously don’t include the two windows when flights arrive and depart most — the 5am-7am morning departure block and the 10pm-midnight late arrival block.
If you have a 6:30am departure on Southwest or Delta, you need the van at 5am. If you’re landing on the last JetBlue from JFK at 11:15pm, you need it at 11:45. The hotels in this ranking are sorted by whether their shuttle actually runs at those times. I called each in the past 60 days and confirmed. Fair warning: management can change service overnight, so verify when you book. All are within 10 minutes' drive of the terminal.
1. Hilton Garden Inn Albany Airport
The gold standard, and unfortunately also often full. Hilton Garden Inn on Wolf Road runs its shuttle every 30 minutes from 4:30am to 11pm, with on-demand pickup for late arrivals up to 1am if you call ahead. The van seats 10 with luggage, drivers are hotel employees (not contractors), and they’ll wait 10 minutes if your flight is delayed. Rates $149-189, breakfast not included.
The building is dated compared to Element and Hyatt House nearby, but the shuttle reliability makes up for it. Ask specifically about shuttle status when you book — during major storms the service can be curtailed, and if you have a 5am departure in January you want a backup plan. Uber from here to the terminal runs $12-16 depending on surge. The hotel also has a covered outdoor waiting area for shuttle pickup, which matters at 4:45am in February.
2. Hyatt House Albany Airport-Wolf Road
Second-best shuttle, first-best hotel in the cluster. Hyatt House runs a van from 5am to 11pm on a request basis, and the response time is 15-20 minutes from a call. The van is newer and cleaner than any competitor. Rates $155-195 including hot breakfast. Because the hotel is one of the newest on Wolf Road (2019), everything feels current — mattresses, bathrooms, common spaces.
The catch: no dedicated early-morning shuttle before 5am, so a 5:45am flight is doable but a 5:15am is not. If you have to be at the airport by 4:30am, book Hilton Garden Inn next door instead. For any flight departing after 6:30am, this is the better choice. Also worth noting: Hyatt loyalty status often clears you into a one-bedroom studio suite even on a base rate, which is genuine value.
3. Homewood Suites Albany Airport
The extended-stay option with a real shuttle. Homewood on Wolf Road runs its van 5am-11pm, similar hours to Hyatt House, with on-demand response typically within 20 minutes. The rooms are proper suites with full kitchens, which is overkill for a one-night airport stay but perfect if you’re arriving before a longer regional stay or a business assignment in the area. Rates $149-189 including hot breakfast.
Shuttle is reliable but the van itself is older than the Hyatt's. Drivers are hotel employees, which helps consistency. Downside: because the hotel books heavily on contractor extended stays, weekday shuttle demand is high and you may wait longer for pickup after 5pm on weeknights. Book here if your trip is 3+ nights and you want a kitchen; skip if it's a one-night stopover.
4. Element Albany Airport
Design-forward hotel, adequate shuttle. Element in Latham runs its van 5am-11pm on request, with a 20-30 minute response time that's slower than the direct Wolf Road competitors because the hotel is slightly further from the terminal — about 8 minutes drive versus 5. Rates $169-219 including breakfast and evening reception three nights a week.
The rooms are the best-looking in the cluster and the beds are new (2020 opening, refreshed 2024). Downside for shuttle purposes: the extra distance means if there's traffic on Route 7, your morning pickup can be tight. I’ve had drivers arrive 12 minutes late for a scheduled 5:30am pickup, which was fine because I built in buffer but could be tight for a 6:15am departure. Book here for the room quality, not the shuttle punctuality.
5. Marriott Albany Airport
Full-service Marriott with a shuttle that mostly works. The Marriott in Latham runs its van 4:30am-11:30pm with on-demand extension for reasonable requests. It's larger than the shuttles at Hyatt House and Homewood, so groups moving together fit better. Rates $189-229, breakfast not included. Restaurant on-site is open until 10pm which is unusual for the Wolf Road area.
The Marriott is the choice for business travellers with points balances and for corporate expense accounts. The lobby is proper hotel lobby, not a Home2Suites-style lounge. Shuttle drivers are contract not employees, which shows in inconsistency — some are cheerful and competent, others clearly haven’t been trained. Book with the expectation that your pickup will happen but might not be smooth.
6. Hampton Inn Albany-Wolf Road
The budget Hilton with a shuttle that runs but not always when you need. Hampton Inn on Wolf Road runs its van 6am-10pm, which means no early-morning support for flights before 7am. Rates $129-159 including breakfast. The building is older and rooms are dated but everything works.
This is fine if your flight is at 9am or later and you’re happy with a $110-per-night rate. It's not fine if your flight is at 6am, in which case Uber costs $12-16 or you’re looking at Hilton Garden Inn instead. Ask at booking whether the shuttle runs earlier for enough demand — sometimes they’ll accommodate two or three guests together on a special 5am run, other times not.
7. Skip these: shuttles that don’t really exist
Skip the older Best Western on Wolf Road — the shuttle is technically "on request" but response times of 45+ minutes are common, and I’ve had two guests report the van being unavailable entirely. Skip the Red Roof Plus on Everett Road, which lists a shuttle but relies on a shared taxi arrangement that costs the guest extra. Skip any Motel 6 or Super 8 in the region; none run genuine airport service.
If your hotel's shuttle fails, your fallbacks are: Uber (5-8 minute wait, $12-16 to terminal), the CDTA #737 bus which runs from Wolf Road to the airport every 30 minutes from 6am to 11pm for $1.50, or a pre-booked airport taxi at $18 flat rate. If you’re arriving late and no shuttle answers, the taxi rank at ALB is reliable and $20 or less to any Wolf Road hotel. Don’t panic-pay for airport parking just to have your own car.
