What Delmar actually is
Delmar is the largest village in the town of Bethlehem, about 5 minutes south of Albany's Delaware Avenue commercial strip. Its centre is the Four Corners — the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Kenwood Avenue — where a three-block commercial cluster provides the village's dining, coffee, hardware, library, and social hub. Beyond the Four Corners it is dense residential: sidewalked streets, mid-century houses, mature trees, and the Bethlehem Central School District, which is one of the reasons families move here and stay.
For a visitor, Delmar reads as a proper small town rather than a strip suburb. The Four Corners has continuous storefronts (unlike Wolf Road), sidewalks that connect to neighbourhoods (unlike Route 9W), and enough restaurants that you could eat three meals in three days without repeating. That is rare in Albany's suburbs, and it is why Delmar attracts the visitors who want quiet without total isolation.
Who Delmar suits
Book Delmar if you are visiting family in Bethlehem, attending a wedding at one of the local venues (Normanside Country Club, the Century House, or a private home), or here for a specific school or church event. It also suits weekend travellers whose priority is a quiet, safe base near enough to Albany for one day of city sightseeing and near enough to Thacher Park and the rail trail for another day of outdoors.
Older travellers and returning locals often prefer Delmar to Center Square or downtown because it is calm at night, easy to park, and free of the college-town noise that Pine Hills and Lark Street can generate on weekends. If your ideal evening ends at 9:30 with a walk from Swifty's back to your room, Delmar is your neighbourhood. If your ideal evening ends at 1am on a Lark Street barstool, it is not.
Who should not
Skip Delmar if you have no car. Transit is thin — CDTA route 18 extension runs through, but frequency is 30-60 minutes and drops on weekends — and rideshares to downtown run $18-25 each way. You will spend more on transport than you save on the room, and the wait times will annoy you.
Also skip it if you want a range of hotel options. The village has one full-service hotel (the Hilton-brand property just outside the Four Corners on Route 9W in Glenmont, 5 minutes south) and a handful of Airbnb and B&B options within Delmar proper. If that one hotel is full for a wedding, your choices collapse fast. Compare with Colonie's 20 hotels within a mile — Delmar cannot match that flexibility.
What a night costs
The Glenmont hotel just south of Delmar runs $115 to $170 depending on the weekend and event calendar. Delmar Airbnbs and B&Bs range $110-250. Compared to downtown Albany equivalents, you save $10-30 midweek and often nothing on weekends, since supply is tight. The value proposition is not the price — it is the quality of the stay.
Peaks are Bethlehem Central School graduation (late June), the Tulip Festival weekend (Albany overflow drives Delmar rates up 15-25%), and any home football weekend at the high school. The quietest windows are mid-January through late February and the second half of November. Parking is free everywhere, and unlike downtown Albany, you will not circle a block looking for a space.
What is walkable from the Four Corners
From a rental within the Four Corners walking radius, you can reach on foot: Swifty's Restaurant and Pub 3 minutes, My Place Bar and Kitchen 4, Uncommon Grounds coffee 3, Delmar Marketplace deli 5, the Bethlehem Public Library 4, Delaware Plaza (Whole Foods) 10, the Delmar rail trail trailhead at Elsmere 8, Elm Avenue Town Park 15-20 minutes. That is a genuine walkable evening.
Not walkable: anything in Albany proper, Five Rivers (a 12-minute drive), Thacher Park (18 minutes), the Rail Trail's Voorheesville end (drive or bike). CDTA route 18 will take you into Albany's Delaware Avenue and onward to downtown, but the schedule is thin enough that most visitors drive.
Delmar versus Delaware Avenue in Albany
Delaware Avenue is denser, closer to downtown Albany by 8 minutes, and reads as urban rather than suburban. Delmar is quieter, has a proper village centre in the Four Corners, and gives you a slightly better dinner walk (four solid restaurants within 5 minutes on foot versus three or four spread across a longer stretch of Delaware Avenue). Prices are within $20 of each other.
For a first Albany trip, Delaware Avenue wins because it is closer to downtown attractions. For a repeat visit, a family visit, or a wedding weekend where you want the room to feel like a break, Delmar wins. If you are staying three or more nights and doing a mix of city and outdoors, Delmar's balance is genuinely nice. If you are staying one night to see the Capitol, do not overthink it — book Center Square.

Book the Glenmont Hilton-brand property if you want a full-service hotel with breakfast, a pool, and a reliable room, and are willing to drive 5 minutes to the Four Corners for dinner. Book a Delmar Airbnb inside the Four Corners walking radius if you want to walk to dinner and cook breakfast. Avoid the further-south Selkirk chains unless price is the only variable — you gain nothing over Glenmont and lose 5 minutes on every Albany drive.
Time it right. Delmar is at its best in late September and October, when the residential streets turn and the Rail Trail is at peak walking weather. May is a close second. Winter is functional. Book graduation-weekend rooms by March, Tulip Festival by February. Weekday nights in November and February are the region's best-kept value.

Not really. You will spend more time driving into Albany than a downtown base requires, and you gain a quieter room at the cost of a less immersive trip. Delmar shines for repeat visitors, family visits, wedding weekends, and outdoor-focused trips. For a three-day Capitol and museums itinerary, base in Center Square or downtown.
Swifty's is the reliable neighbourhood pub and the answer for most visitors — solid burgers, better-than-necessary wings, a full bar. My Place across the street is slightly more ambitious. Uncommon Grounds is the coffee and bagel stop in the morning. All three are within 90 seconds of each other on foot.
Delmar is denser and has the most walkable village centre. Slingerlands is more upscale-residential with a smaller commercial cluster at Route 85, and closer to Thacher Park. Glenmont is more strip-commercial along Route 9W, with the area's main hotel. For a walkable stay, Delmar. For a hotel stay, Glenmont. For pure residential quiet, Slingerlands.
