Rates during these weekends behave predictably: a Hampton Inn room that runs $135 on a normal May weekend hits $269-$319. A Renaissance Albany room jumps from $210 to $429. UAlbany commencement: the biggest hit
The University at Albany's spring commencement is the largest single event on the local hotel calendar. Overflow spills across the Hudson into Albany, Watervliet, and Menands. If RPI and UAlbany graduate the same weekend, which happens some years, the entire metro area hits capacity.
The Hilton Garden Inn Troy is the single best RPI-adjacent property and books 6-9 months out. Its $189 normal rate becomes $349 for that weekend. If you cannot get it, the Albany Renaissance is a 12-minute drive and often has availability even when Troy is sold out, at similar prices. The Franklin Plaza is smaller and books via a different channel; call directly rather than using OTAs and you sometimes uncover rooms.
Siena and Union: the smaller two
Siena College's commencement in Loudonville draws about 800 undergraduates plus families, so 3,000-4,000 visitors. The impact concentrates on Colonie hotels along Wolf Road: the Desmond, the Best Western Sovereign, the Homewood Suites, and the Hampton Inn Latham. Rates spike but not as violently as UAlbany weekend, typically 60-80% above normal rather than doubling. Siena's ceremony usually happens at MVP Arena downtown, which shifts some overflow to Renaissance and Hilton downtown properties.
Union College in Schenectady graduates in mid-June, later than the others, which spares Schenectady's hotel market from doubling up with anyone else. The Hampton Inn Schenectady, the Hilton Garden Inn Schenectady, and the Rivers Casino hotel absorb most of the demand. Union is small (about 500 undergraduates), so the spike is more like 40-50% above normal rates. This is the mildest of the four and the most bookable at the last minute if you have flexibility on lodging location.
What booking window actually works
For UAlbany and RPI weekend: book by January 15. For Siena weekend: book by February 15. For Union weekend: book by March 15. These are not marketing deadlines, these are the honest points after which quality options start disappearing. If you book UAlbany weekend accommodation in April, you are choosing between a $429 Renaissance room, a $319 Fairfield in Latham, or a $600 house in Delmar on Vrbo. There is no good cheap option that late.
One more nuance: many of these hotels have two-night minimums on graduation weekends. This is not always disclosed on the initial booking screen; it appears when you try to check out. Plan for two nights (Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday) even if you technically only need one. Also, graduations often have prepaid non-refundable rate requirements this weekend only. If you are not attending a graduation but visit anyway
Sometimes people book Albany trips before realizing the dates conflict. The salvage plan: shift to Rensselaer, Delmar, or Bethlehem hotels.
