About Albany Institute of History and Art

The Albany Institute of History and Art is one of the oldest museums in the United States, founded in 1791. It predates the Louvre as a public collection and holds the best assembly of Hudson River School paintings outside New York City, with works by Thomas Cole, Frederic Church and Asher Durand. Two Ancient Egyptian mummies acquired in 1909, including the temple priest Ankhefenmut from Thebes around 1000 BCE, are displayed with a painted coffin and CT scan images. The Albany history wing keeps the original 1686 Dongan Charter, Dutch silver from the beaver-trade era and cast-iron stoves from the local foundries. The beaux-arts building on Washington Avenue, with a modern glass connector, can be walked in a focused two hours. First Friday evenings the museum stays open free until 20:00 with live music in the atrium, and Wednesday and Thursday between 14:00 and 16:00 are the emptiest hours of the week.

Tips for staying near Albany Institute of History and Art

  • Wednesday and Thursday between 14:00 and 16:00 are the emptiest hours of the week, and the Hudson River School room is quietest then. Plan your museum time around that window if you want the galleries to yourself.
  • First Friday evenings the museum stays open free until 20:00 with live music in the atrium. If your visit falls on one, book your Albany room early and walk over after dinner.
  • The Egyptian gallery on the lower level and the Hudson River School rooms upstairs are the highlights. Two hours is enough for a focused visit, and the Institute sits three blocks north of the Capitol on Washington Avenue.
  • The gift shop is good for local books and prints. Skip the small cafe and try Iron Gate Cafe two blocks east instead, then walk down to the Capitol or Empire State Plaza.
  • Several hotels here offer parking, including Albany Vacation Rental w State Capitol Views, Charming Apt W patio and Spacious Apartment Downtown Albany NY. If you are driving in, pick one with a space and leave the car for the day.
